Paul Wilkins named Head Coach
Paul Wilkins, former GW Oarsman and Coxswain, became GW Crew’s Head Coach in 1981. Coach Wilkins would serve as Head Coach for the next 15 seasons – through the 1995-96 academic year.
Paul coached GW Men and GW Women’s teams for most of those years, bringing a competitive fire and forward-looking ambition to all his teams. For many of those years, GW Crew was far from being the largest, deepest, or best-equipped crews – but, under Paul’s leadership, would relentlessly over-perform.
Assistant coaches were enlisted to help realize Coach Wilkin’s vision for GW Crew. While John Devlin came on board in 1991 to coach the men’s team, assistance were often tasked with teaching fundamentals to the novice crews.
Those novice team coaches brought rowing experience from GW as well as storied programs from Rutgers and University of Pennsylvania.
Steve Weiss, a former GW Oarsman and Potomac Boat Club sculler, was Paul’s trusted and capable assistant for that first season and for several seasons thereafter. Others coaches through the years included Charlie Zaloom and Bob Burke (1984-85), Bill Threadgill (1985-86), Patrick Troppe (1990-91), Darius Unwalla (1990-91 and 1991-92), David Lincoln (1991-92), Leslie Layer, and many others.
In recognition of that service to the university and the thousands of student-athletes Paul coached, Coach Wilkins was inducted into GW Athletic Hall of Fame.
